The differnce between reseeding vs. overseeding a lawn is whether you're keeping your current lawn or not. Overseeding is planting grass seed over existing turf, while reseeding is starting a new lawn from scratch.
Pros and cons of overseeding
Overseeding has the fallowing benefits:
Less intensive and expensive than a full lawn renovation
Keeps warm-season lawns green in the winter
Great at fixing minor damage
Adds new, more resisitant turf without tearing up your lawn
On the other hand, it also has some downsides:
Can't change your grass type
Older grass can choke out new grass
Cann't repair severely damaged or very thin lawns
Reseeding a lawn is more involved than overseeding. Lawn reseeding is the process of killing the old lawn and planting grass seed over the bare dirt. Starting your lawn over from scratch should be your last resort and not the first solution you try.
Pros and cons of reseeding
Reseeding has the fallowing benefits:
Great for changing the grass you're growing
Allows you to solve severe problems with your lawn before planting new grass
Completely refreshes your lawn
On the other hand, it also has these cons:
Takes more time than overseeding
You need to kill evrything first
More Expensive and more labor
